Produced at the Isle of Wight Distillery, the only distillery on the island, Mermaid Gin has been crafted and distilled since about 2014. The ‘Blue’ in the name refers to the original edition, as further variations of the the Mermaid Gin have been released, along with referencing the colour of the bottle – the gin itself is a clear liquid.
Botanicals:
- Rock samphire that has been locally foraged from the Isle of Wight Cliffs, gives the gin a maritime/sea-air note.
- Organic lemon zest provides a bright citrus freshness, while grains of paradise add a slight peppery spice.
- Juniper, as is standard for most Gin products, and a variety of other botanicals such as orris root and coriander seeds.
Taste & Aroma:
- Nose: A citrusy smell with a sweet spice, and a hint of elderflower
- Palate: Bright citrus, peppery spice from the grains of paradise, and a hint of sea salt/sea air from the samphire
- Finish: Long, layered and smooth with a balanced flavour – quite fresh and clean
Production & Design:
Distilled in small batches, using ethically sourced botanicals, the gin is produced in column stills where they take care to cut (discard) the heads and tails of the distillation. This helps to improve the purity and smoothness of the gin. The spirit is then rested for around 7 days, to allow the flavours to mellow and integrate with each other.
Once the process is complete, the gin is then packaged into their sustainable bottles – plastic free packaging, recyclable glass, natural cork and a biodegradable seal. The bottle itself has sculpted scales that swirl down the bottle, referencing a mermaids tail (as per the name), and has even won awards for its design.
Best ways to Enjoy:
- Classic Gin & Tonic: Use a high quality tonic and plenty of ice. Garnish with a slice of lemon, a sprig of samphire or even cucumber.
- Neat: Pour straight over ice to enjoy the more subtle botanicals and sea-air quality.
- Cocktails: Use in a cocktail where citrus and mild spice compliment each other, such as a gin sour.
