Tropical Sun Callaloo is a canned vegetable product made primarily from callaloo leaves, which are similar to spinach and is widely used in Caribbean cooking. These greens are typically tropical plants, which are rich in iron and vitamins A and C.
What is Callaloo?
Callaloo refers to both a dish and the vegetable used to make it – and depending on the region, it can be made with different leaves (amaranth, taro or dasheen leaves). In Jamaican cuisine, it is often sautéed with onions, tomatoes, and sometimes saltfish.

Sautéed Callaloo (Jamaican Style)
- Serves: 2-3 people
- Time: 15 minutes
- Vegan & gluten-free
Ingredients:
- 1 can Tropical Sun Callaloo (drained)
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tomato, diced
- 1 scallion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1/2 scotch bonnet pepper (optional), finely chopped
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil or coconut oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- 1. Heat the oil in a frying pan or skillet over medium heat.
- 2. Add onion, garlic, scallion and scotch bonnet (if using). Cook for 2-3 minutes until soft and fragrant.
- 3. Add tomato and thyme, and cook for another 2 minutes until the tomato starts to break down.
- 4. Stir in the drained callaloo and mix well.
- 5. Cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until everything is heated through and combined.
- 6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- 7. Serve hot with fried dumplings, boiled green banana, yam or a side of rice.
